More and more sites seem to be splitting up their websites by using sub domains. From an SEO perspective, each is seen as a new domain. Nevertheless, an interesting strategy: Take Kidspot for instance, a well known kids website started in Melbourne, which has enjoyed phenomenal growth in recent years.

They have the kidspot.com.au website and the social kidspot site which hosts their forums, news, sharing and so on. They also have their mommy bloggers there. So the formal content is on the formal domain and the user generated content on the sub domain. Interesting that the social sub domain only has 1,804 backlinks while the main domain has around 78,000 per Yahoo.

Great site if you have kids.
